There are four main types of DC motors:
1. Permanent magnet DC motor
Permanent magnet Motors use permanent magnets to generate magnetic flux. This type of DC motor provides good start-up torque and has good speed adjustment, but the torque is limited, so they are usually used for low-horsepower applications.
2. Series DC Motor
In a series DC motor, the magnetic field is wound around several large wires to carry the full armature current. In general, Tandem DC can produce a large amount of start-up torque, but it can not adjust the speed, and may even be damaged due to no load operation. These limitations mean that they are not ideal for variable speed drive applications.
3. Concurrent DC Motor
In parallel DC motor, the magnetic field and armature winding are in parallel(in parallel). These motors provide good speed regulation because the flow field can be excited separately from the armature winding, which also provides a simplified reversing control.
4. Composite DC motor
Composite DC motors, such as parallel DC motors, have a separate excitation flow field. Composite DC motor has good starting torque, but control problems may be encountered in the application of variable speed drive.
