What is a BOM?

2. What is a BOM?

To use computer-aided enterprise production management, the computer must first read out the product composition and all the materials to be involved in the enterprise. In order to facilitate computer identification, the product structure represented by the graphic must be converted into a certain data format. The file that describes the product structure in data format is the bill of materials, which is the BOM.

It is a technical file that defines the structure of a product, so it is also known as a product structure table or a product structure tree. In some industries, it may be called a "recipe table", an "element table" or other name.

In the MRPII and ERP systems, the term material has a broad meaning. It is a general term for all products, semi-finished products, work-in-progress, raw materials, accessory parts, collaboration parts, consumables, etc.

In the usual MRPII and ERP systems, BOM refers to a relationship tree composed of parents and components. The BOM can be in the form of a top-down decomposition or provide information in a bottom-up tracking manner.

In MRPII and ERP systems, BOM is a kind of organizational relationship between data. Using the hierarchical relationship between these data can be used as the basis for the design of many functional modules. Some expressions of these data are summary reports that we are familiar with.
