What is a direct drive motor?

Direct drive motors are rotary or linear motors with loads directly connected to the motor and no mechanical transmission components such as gearboxes or belt and pulley systems. In other words, the motor drives the load directly.

Rotary direct drive motors are often referred to as torque motors because they produce high torque at low speeds, even when stalled. The torque motor is mostly a brushless permanent magnet synchronous motor, which is very similar to a conventional servo motor, but has many magnetic poles. Often they are designed to be frameless, without housings, bearings or feedback devices, and these components will be purchased and integrated separately by the user.

▲ Rotary direct drive motors, also called torque motors, are usually designed to be frameless and have no housing, bearings or feedback devices.

Another type of rotary direct drive motor is a pancake motor, also known as a Lorentzforce motor or a printed armature motor. These motors are brushed DC motors that print armature windings on non-magnetic insulation plates. The armature disk is placed between two stator disks with alternating permanent magnets of the north and south poles. The magnetic flux extends axially along the length of the motor and the current flows radially (rather than flowing axially as in a conventional motor). According to the Lorentz force, this produces torque on the motor shaft.

▲The flat motor consists of a printed armature (rotor) between two permanent magnet stators. This gives them a very thin profile and a large diameter, also known as a "pancake motor".

Although piezoelectric motors and voice coil motors (actuators) are highly specialized motor types, they are also classified as direct drive motors due to their direct coupling to the piezoelectric or voice coil mechanism.

Direct drive linear motors are often referred to simply as "linear motors." These motors include both ironless and iron cores, depending on the structure of the primary component (including the windings). The main components of the ironless core are made of windings embedded in epoxy, while the cores are wound and mounted in the stack. Another distinguishing feature of a linear direct drive motor is whether it has a flat or tubular structure.
