Upgrade Existing Stepper Systems

Upgrade existing stepper systems

In components in integrated stepper motor systems, the motor, power amplifier and communication costs typically do not increase when going from open loop to closed loop. Control electronics may require more central processing power or memory to servo control the motor, but these usually do not affect the price of the list. The cost difference between open-loop and closed-loop stepping systems is primarily due to the addition of high-resolution feedback devices, but manufacturing improvements have made these devices less expensive. So now, closed-loop stepping systems maintain the cost advantage of open-loop stepper systems over other types of positioning systems, such as traditional servo systems, but greatly improve performance in almost all respects.

In addition to the minimal cost increase, NEMA frame size products simplify the upgrade from open loop stepping systems to closed loop systems. The closed-loop NEMA23 stepper motor has the same frame size, guide diameter, bolt hole circle and bolt hole diameter as the open-loop NEMA23 stepper motor, so the mounting bracket remains unchanged. The greater torque available in a closed loop system means that the shaft diameter of a closed loop stepper motor may be larger, but this problem can usually be easily solved by simply changing the coupling.
