Foley hopes that the final victory belongs to his company's APM200 spoke motor. He said that the APM200 is the most efficient electric motor permanent magnet motor with the highest torque and power density (kW/kg), and it has the advantages of low cost and light weight.
The APM200 motor weighs approximately 49kg (108lb) and has a maximum speed of 10,000 rpm. The maximum power and maximum torque are 220kW (295hp) and 450N•m (332lb•ft), respectively, using a lower cost NdFeB magnet (NdFeB). It reduces the overall cost of the motor and is equipped with a 5.5:1 integral planetary gearbox. The output shaft of the gearbox is directly connected to the hub. In addition, Equipmake has developed a dedicated inverter for the APM200, which uses a power electronics technology that combines silicon carbide diodes and IGBTs (insulated gate bipolar transistors) to enable the motor to operate at high power with high frequency conversion.
