There are two kinds of DC motor speed control modes: voltage regulation and frequency modulation.
A common fan with a brush motor can change the speed by means of voltage regulation, and a fan using a variable frequency motor can only be regulated by frequency modulation.
For a brushed motor, changing the supply voltage changes the current in the rotor winding to change the strength and torque of the magnetic field. The speed of the motor increases with increasing torque and decreases with decreasing torque. This type of motor will reduce the speed of the motor as the load resistance increases. In order to maintain the same speed when the load changes, closed-loop control must be used, which is realized by speed negative feedback, so the control circuit is more complicated.
