How Printers Work

The motor of the printer is often a stepper motor, which is an electric actuator commonly used in digital control systems and can accurately control position and speed. Its working principle is to rotate the motor rotor within a certain angle range through a constantly changing current, thereby achieving precise position control. This article will explore the principle and working method of the printer stepper motor in depth.

1. The basic structure of the printer's stepper motor
The printer's stepper motor is mainly composed of two parts: the stator and the rotor. The stator includes components such as the stator core, the stator coil and the end cover, while the rotor includes components such as the rotor core, the rotor coil and the bearing. The stator coil usually adopts a two-phase or four-phase structure, and its wiring methods include star connection and triangle connection. When the motor is working, the magnetic field in the stator coil is constantly changing through the constantly changing current, thereby driving the rotor to rotate.

2. The working principle of the stepper motor
The working principle of the printer's stepper motor is to rotate the motor rotor within a certain angle range through a constantly changing current, thereby achieving precise position control. The speed of the motor is related to the current size and frequency, and the motor's movement mode is usually divided into full step and half step.

In full-step mode, the motor can only rotate one full step at a time, and the step size is determined by the structure of the motor. In the full-step mode of the stepper motor, each step can be divided into four different microsteps, and the angle of each microstep is one-quarter of the step. The motor can only stop or start in these microsteps, and cannot stop or switch directions in microsteps.

In half-step mode, the step length of each motor rotation is half of that in full-step mode, so the motor control is more precise, but because each step length becomes smaller, the motor speed will also decrease accordingly.

3. Working mode of printer stepper motor

The working mode of the printer stepper motor can be divided into two types: open-loop control and closed-loop control. In the open-loop control mode, the control signal of the motor is sent by an external controller, and the movement of the motor is achieved by controlling the size and frequency of the current. This method is simple to control and low in cost, but due to the influence of external environmental factors, the control accuracy of the motor is limited.
In the closed-loop control mode, the motor controller will monitor the position and speed of the motor in real time, and adjust the control signal of the motor through the feedback mechanism, so as to control the movement of the motor more accurately. This method has high control accuracy, but high cost.

4. Application of printer stepper motors
Printer stepper motors are widely used in printers, electronic equipment, robots and other fields. Due to its precise position and speed control capabilities, it can achieve high-precision motion control, so it is widely used in occasions that require precise positioning and speed control.
