By shifting the gear lever, the driving gear on the intermediate shaft is switched and combined with the power output shaft through different gear combinations to change the torque and speed of the driving wheel.
The power input shaft of the engine is connected with the power output shaft indirectly through an intermediate shaft.As shown in the figure above, the two gears on the intermediate shaft (red) and the two gears on the power output shaft (blue) rotate along with the engine output.But without the synchronizer (purple) joint, the two gears (blue) can only rotate over the power output shaft.In the picture, the synchronizer is in the middle state, which means the transmission is in neutral.
When the gear shift lever moves to the left and the synchronizer moves to the right to engage the gear (shown above), engine power passes through the intermediate shaft's gear, transferring power to the power output shaft.
